Carl William Seward serves as the mathematics coach at Gunston Middle Schoool, one of five middle schools served by the Arlington Public Schools, in Arlington, Virginia. Carl is responsible for the professional development and support of classroom teachers and instructional assistants working with students in mathematics. Additionally, he is responsible for facilitating professional learning communities to plan standards-based instruction and assessment, modeling lessons, co-teaching, student course placement in mathematics, and assisting school administrators and instructional staff to interpret data and design approaches to improve student achievement in mathematics.
Before working in Arlington, Carl served as a middle school mathematics teacher (Churchland Middle School), high school mathematics teacher (Woodrow Wilson HIgh School), and division-level secondary mathematics instructional specialist (Department of Curriculum and Instruction) for the Portsmouth Public Schools in Portsmouth, Virginia. In addition to his work for Portsmouth Public Schools, Carl served the community for seven years as an adjunct lecturer of mathematics for the Chesapeake Campus of the Tidewater Community College. In October 2014, Carl was name as one of the Top 10 community college professors in the country by RateMyProfessor.com and USA Today. Carl began his teaching career in 2004 as a mathematics teacher and school-wide algebra readiness grant coordinator for the Virginia Beach City Public Schools (Landstown High School and Technology Academy) in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
An Office of Naval Research, NASA, and Ronald E. McNair Scholar while an undergraduate, Carl earned a bachelors degree in mathematics with minors in physics and secondary education, cum laude, from Elizabeth City State University in May 2004. He returned to Elizabeth City State University while working full-time as a mathematics teacher and community college instructor in 2009 to earn the master of science degree in mathematics, graduating in December 2011. From there, Carl pursued a post-master's certificate in educational leadership and administration from the George Washington University, earning the certificate in May 2013, before being accepted in the master of arts degree program in educational leadership from Hampton University. Carl will graduate from Hampton University with his second masters degree in December 2014.
His next academic goal is to pursue a doctor of education degree in Leadership for Educational Equity with a concentration in mathematics education from the University of Colorado at Denver beginning in the summer of 2015 through distance education coursework during the fall and spring, and one week residencies during the summers, allowing Carl to continue to live in his beloved Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area while pursue his doctoral degree. His career goals include becoming a school division supervisor of mathematics education, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, and ultimately, a division superintendent of schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia. After his career in PreK-12 education in the Commonwealth, Carl would like to enter his retirement years as a full-time university professor, teaching mathematics, mathematics education, and/or educational leadership courses undergraduate and graduate courses.
